Qld: Tree clearing rules a Nazi tactic, opposition

Queensland's opposition has accused the state government of adopting Nazi propaganda
tactics to sell its proposed tree-clearing restrictions.

Opposition leader ROB BORBIDGE says mandatory vegetation clearing laws announced yesterday
would be abolished under a Coalition government and replaced by a voluntary or negotiated
code of practice.

The vegetation management legislation was introduced to parliament after government
negotiations with farmers and conservationists failed to reach total agreement.

Under the legislation, one-third of the vegetation that covered the state when Europeans
first landed will be preserved.

But Mr BORBIDGE says slick television advertisements aired on prime-time slots last
night would have taken weeks to produce - which shows the government's negotiations were
insincere.

Mr BORBIDGE has appealed to Queensland's city-dwellers not to be misled by what he
describes as Nazi-style propaganda.

He says thousands of farming families face financial ruin because the tree clearing
rules will hamper their usual farming practices.
