FED: Group accused of "lying" about osteoporosis danger
The organisers of an awareness campaign for osteoporosis have been forced to correctclaims that the bone disease kills more women than cancer.
The claim is described as a bald-faced lie and patent rubbish by Australian governmentadviser on false health claims, MARK DONOHOE, in the British Medical Journal.
Investigative medical journalist RAY MOYNIHAN reports in the BMJ that as part of NationalHealthy Bones Week earlier this month, GPs were sent posters claiming that more Australianwomen die from osteoporosis than all female cancers combined.
However the Australian Bureau of Statistics says cancer is the leading cause of death.
The organisers of Healthy Bones Week, which is a joint initiative of Osteoporosis Australiaand Dairy Australia, have admitted the information was poorly written and correctionsare on the way.
